Just Another Manic Monday Link Roundup - Aug 17, 2009

Everyday I encounter a number of interesting websites, articles, and blog posts that are definitely worth mentioning. I hope you find these as interesting as I do!

  • Audio interview with Joy Ladin, a poet and a professor of English at Yeshiva University’s Stern College for Women, about her decision to transition genders, her relationship to God, and the reaction from her Orthodox students. [Tablet]
  • Sharsheret, an organization offering free support services to young Jewish women living with (or at high risk for) breast cancer, will be expanding to provide for women with ovarian cancer and those predisposed to the disease. [The Sisterhood]
  • Too Many Non-Profits?  Bob Goldfarb explains why the multitude is a good thing. [eJP]
  • The New York Times featured Loretta Weinberg, the "feisty Jewish grandmother" running for Lieutenant Governor of New Jersey we mentioned earlier. [The New York Times]
  • Sadie from 'Jezebel' finds Cintra Wilson's latest fashion article in the New York Times "remarkably nasty" to both fat people and "middle America" - full of snobbery, cruelty, and ugliness.  I completely agree. [Jezebel] Cintra Wilson apologized on her website, first insincerely then sincerely.
  • The NonProfit Times releases their Top 50 Power & Influence honorees. They will be recognized at the NPT Power & Influence Top 50 Gala next month at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.  Out of the 50 winners, 17 are women. I'm not sure if that's significant, but I thought I'd throw it out there. [NPT]
  • First the world's largest matzoh ball, now a record-breaking custard pie fight by the UK's Jewish Lads' and Girls' Brigade! [Daily Gazette]
  • Why kids like Grandma's house better; a cartoon by Marjorie Ingall. [Tablet]
  • Last week I linked to Sarah Seltzer's post about Rachel Menken, the "Jewess" of 'Mad Men.'  It seems that was just the crest of the wave of hype over 'Mad Men' in the feminist blogosphere. Check out Crystal Merritt's post about women in advertising and Michelle Dean's post on fans' reactions to a rape scene. This show is clearly providing a lot of juicy fodder for criticism and discussion. I may just have to add it to my Netflix!
  • And for your daily dose of laughter check out Orly Taitz, interviewing herself. "Can I finish?" [JTA]
