Some things we missed: July Link Roundup

  • Aurora Mendelsohn of Rainbow Tallit Baby discusses the use of the word "egalitarian" in different aspects of Jewish life on Jewschool. She writes, "I could not help channeling Inigo Montoya; “Egalitarian…You keep using that word. I don’t think it means what you think it means.” It began to dawn on me that egalitarianism in Jewish practice might be in the eye of the beholder." Read more at Jewschool.
  • Too tsnius for Facebook? Behold FaceGlat, the gender-segregated Facebook equivalent for Orthodox Jews. Renee Ghert-Zand has more at The Schmooze.
  • Things got heated over a blog post by a JTS rabbinic student about whether women should stay home with kids or become rabbis on the Sisterhood. The author wrote: "I would rather see at least one parent at home full-time with her/his baby or toddler – ideally the birth mother, unless the child is adopted. This is what is best for the baby." Rabbi Phyllis Sommer spoke in defense of personal choice at Ima on (and off) the Bima.
  • Chaviva Galatz reviews Hereville: How Mirka Got Her Sword, a graphic novel about an 11-year-old troll-fighting Orthodox Jewish girl. So cool! Read more at Kvetching Editor.
  • A brewing debate sparked by Jewish "men's clubs" brings up two important questions: Have women "taken over" Jewish communal life and is there value in single-gender spaces? See Chanel Dubofsky's piece and Debra Nussbaum Cohen's response on the Sisterhood. (Neither address how single-gender spaces are problematic for trans and gender queer Jews.)
