Since she first came to New Orleans in 1969, Ruth Kullman was an essential part of the local Jewish community, working with Jewish Family Service and the Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans. As president of the Touro synagogue when Katrina hit, Kullman began working to restore the building and help find a new rabbi for the community. In 2013 she was honored by the National Council of Jewish Women with their Hannah G. Solomon Award, largely for her efforts in helping the community recover after the storm.
