Lt. Charlotte Chaney (far right) was one of the first Army nurses to arrive to assist the survivors of Dachau. According to the Shoah Foundation, Born Charlotte Ellner on October 15, 1921, in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, she trained as a nurse. In 1944 she volunteered for the Army Air Corps, and was sent to Europe in the spring of 1945 as part of the Red Cross. At Dachau, she helped clean up the camp and to nurse survivors back to health. Charlotte returned stateside in August, 1945 where she continued her career as a nurse.
