Congresswoman Susan Davis, the first Democrat in more than fifty years to serve more than one term for California’s 53rd district, has repeatedly fought for women’s health issues on both a state and local level. Davis began as a social worker before her election to the San Diego School Board in 1983, and served eight of her nine years on the board as either president or vice president. From 1994–2000, she served in the California State Assembly, where she drafted a state law allowing women to see their OB–GYN without a referral from their GP. Elected to the US House of Representatives in 2001, she introduced legislation to make that state law a national right for all women every year before Congress until the Affordable Care Act passed and incorporated her provisions into the larger bill. Davis also serves on the House Armed Services Committee and the Committee on Education and the Workforce.
