Known for the feminist anthem “You Don’t Own Me,” teenage pop sensation Lesley Gore carefully negotiated which parts of her life the media did and did not own. Born Lesley Sue Goldstein, Gore began taking voice lessons at fifteen and sent a demo tape to Mercury Records, leading to her first hit, “It’s My Party” in 1963. She was featured in several movies, including the TAMI Show (Teen Age Music International) in 1964, and appeared as Pussycat, one of Catwoman’s sidekicks, on Batman in 1967. Despite the pressures of fame, she limited her concerts and appearances to weekends and summers to avoid conflicting with her high school and college education, and graduated from Sarah Lawrence in 1968. Together with her brother Michael, Gore composed songs for the 1980 film Fame, alongside the dozen studio albums and numerous singles she released throughout her career. She performed both in concert and on television through the 1980s and 1990s. In 2005, with the release of Ever Since (her first album of new music in 20 years), Gore publicly came out as a lesbian and revealed that she had been in a committed relationship since 1982.
