Miriam “Mimi” Miller resisted her family’s notions of the proper life for a nice Jewish girl, not only training as a nurse but serving in a combat zone in the Philippines through some of the worst devastation of World War II. Miller joined the Navy Nurse Corps as soon as she graduated from the Wilkes–Barre General Hospital School of Nursing in 1943. She first served stateside at the Great Lakes Naval Station and the San Diego Naval Hospital, but in 1945, she was assigned to Fleet Hospital 111 in Guam, caring for the heavy casualties after the battles of Okinawa and Iwo Jima. After the war, she returned stateside, marrying Dr. Robert Shor, who had also served in the war. Miller remained involved in veterans’ affairs after the war, and in 1961 she was elected president of the Jewish War Veterans National Ladies Auxiliary.
