Ruth Mosko Handler

Best known as the inventor of the Barbie doll, Ruth Mosko Handler combined her marketing genius with her husband Elliot Handler’s creative designs to form the toy company Mattel, Inc., in 1939. Her battles with cancer later in her career led her to create the company Nearly Me, which developed prosthetics for breast cancer survivors.

Margaret Naumburg

By founding the Walden School and creating her own system of education based on principles of psychoanalysis, Margaret Naumburg laid the groundwork for the new discipline of art therapy. Naumburg also authored many works on psychology and art therapy.

Ruth Lewinson

Born in 1895, Ruth Lewinson was one of the earliest female Jewish lawyers in the United States. In addition to her own private practice, she was active on multiple boards and committees as well as other organizations including charitable work.

Beatrice Alexander

Beatrice Alexander, best known as Madame Alexander, started her dollmaking business out of her home in 1923; it later became one of the largest in the United States. She created many collections based on historic events as well as literature, music, art, and film, believing that dolls play a vital role in the early development of children. Her dolls are now on permanent display at museums worldwide, including the Smithsonian Institute.
