Robert C. Bannister

Robert C. Bannister is Professor of History (emeritus) at Swarthmore College. His publications include Social Darwinism: Science and Myth (1979); Sociology and Scientism: The American Search for Objectivity 1880–1940 (University of North Carolina, 1987); and Jessie Bernard: The Making of a Feminist (Rutgers University Press, 1991).

Sociologist Jessie Bernard’s feminist epiphany came at age 67 in 1969, but her earlier work anticipated feminist theory by discussing the differences between men’s and women’s experiences and arguing that quantitative studies did not accurately represent women’s stories.
