Anja Hellhammer

Anja Hellhammer is a Ph.D. candidate in art history at University of Cologne, completing her dissertation, “The Photographic Works of Nini and Carry Hess.” From 1995 to 2003 she was a member of the scientific staff at the University of Cologne’s Theaterwissenschaftliche Sammlung, where she headed the photographic collection. She is the author of various publications concerning intermedial aspects of photography (theater, dance, film and arts) and the history of photography.

In the years between 1914 and 1933, numerous significant personalities in art, culture, politics, society and sport met in the photographic portraiture studio of Nini and Carry Hess. With their technical and aesthetic brilliance, the sisters were among the leading photographers in Germany of the time.
