M. Alison Kibler

M. Alison Kibler is assistant professor of American Studies and Women’s and Gender Studies at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa. She is the author of Rank Ladies: Gender and Cultural Hierarchy in American Vaudeville (1999) and is currently working on “Paddy, Shylock and Sambo: Irish, Jewish and African American Protests against Mass Culture, 1890–1930.”

Louise Dresser

Louise Dresser was a celebrated singer in vaudeville and musical comedy, as well as a star in early motion pictures. Known largely for her rendition of Paul Dresser’s song “My Gal Sal,” she also sang his “On the Banks of the Wabash.” After vaudeville, Louise Dresser found success on Broadway, before moving to Hollywood to star in films opposite Will Rogers. 

Nora Bayes

Nora Bayes was a star in vaudeville and musical comedy in the early twentieth century. Known for her lush singing voice and hilarious acting, Bayes was a part of the Ziegfeld Follies, the Keith vaudeville circuit, and had her own one-woman show. Bayes had  many arguments with male producers, theater administrators, and businessmen, as she often questioned the traditional role of women and asserted her independence.
