Chelsie Simone May

Chelsie May received their PhD from the University of Chicago's Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations. They held a Frankel Institute for the Humanities Dissertation Fellow for the 2020-2021 academic year for their dissertation "Watching Whiteness Work?: The Racialization of Jewish Women in Iraq and Israel/Palestine." In the 2021-2022 academic year, Chelsie will be a Humanities Teaching Fellow at the University of Chicago. Their research and teaching interests include gender and race in the modern Middle East, Middle East history, and intersectionality.

When Jewish women participated in the Iraqi Communist Party (ICP) during the 1940s, it was at its apex as the largest Communist organization in the modern Middle East. While their numbers are small and many of their names have been lost to history, Iraqi Jewish women participated in the ICP as committed, active, and indispensable comrades.
