Jael Silliman

Jael Silliman was a tenured Associate Professor at the University of Iowa. She has written extensively on issues of development, women's rights and about the Baghdadi Jewish community to which she belongs. Her books on the subject include Jewish Portraits, Indian Frames: Women's Narratives from a Diaspora of Hope, and two novels, The Man With Many Hats and The Teak Almirah.

Baghdadi Jewish Women in India

Baghdadi Jews arrived in India in the late eighteenth century and ultimately formed important diaspora communities in Bombay and Calcutta. Many notable Baghdadi Indian women were involved in philanthropy, Jewish and Zionist organizations, education, and film acting.
