Randi Abramson

Medical Director
Randi Abramson, medical director and primary care physician.

Randi Abramson is the medical director of Bread for the City in Washington, D.C. A primary care physician, she has devoted her career to providing medical care to underserved people in the nation’s capital.

In her interview, Randi discusses how she came to work at the clinic and why the choice has been the right one for her. She talks about the challenges and rewards of working with poor people.

She reflects on growing up Jewish in Toledo, Ohio, where she sometimes felt singled out as a Jew, and how this influenced her later choices to spend time in Israel and become involved with Young Judea. She also discusses the challenges faced by the first wave of women to enter the competitive and sometimes hostile world of medical school in any numbers.

Randi has a strong Jewish identity; she considers how that may have affected her career choice. She also describes the relentless balancing act required to sustain one’s responsibilities as both a mother and a professional.

The mother of three grown children, she is married to Michael Lieberman, an attorney for the Anti-Defamation League.

Dr. Abramson is the medical doctor that I most admire. I first visited her as a patient over 20 years ago at Bread for the City during the time when I had no health insurance. I have never encountered a physician that I thought knew more about her profession or who was more caring of her patients. She is an amazing human being.

Dr Randi is truly a phenomenal woman. I have the pleasure of knowing her but never had seen this footage before today. I am in awe of how she has stayed true to herself and is truly a blessing to all who know her.

I think I may have met Randi at a kibbutz in Israel. It was Kibbutz Sdot Yam and the year was 1979. I would be interested to know if Randi stayed at that kibbutz. I remember she was from Ohio and she liked reading about Golda Meir.
