Consciousness-raising

Consciousness-raising (or “CR”) groups were the analytical process of the women’s liberation movement through which women explored the political aspects of personal life. A CR group consisted of a small number of women who met informally but regularly at a member’s home or women’s center to discuss topics such as family, work, sex, health, and education in terms of their own life experience. Through these groups, women realized that what they had been taught to perceive as individual problems or choices were often determined by larger structural forces.
