Setting the Feminist Agenda

Women have continually struggled to define who and what feminism includes, asking: when do women need to have their own space, and when can they collaborate with men? How can feminism address the needs of all women? How and when should other movements for equality and liberation be included under the feminist banner?

Separate Space

Even as they sought to gain access to traditionally male institutions and professions, feminists also learned to value the power of women’s community. In women-only groups and events, feminists were able to explore the nuances of their own experiences, to talk and listen without the distraction of gender dynamics, and to appreciate their own strength as women.

Feminism or Feminisms?

Is feminism really inclusive of all women? Is racism a feminist issue? Can you be a feminist and like pornography? How many points of view can feminism encompass? The women’s movement is continually learning and growing from such questions, as feminists work together – sometimes peacefully and sometimes with conflict – to define their agenda.
