The first of Ha-Shomer ha-Zai'r's leadership to answer the call was the last to fall: Tosia (Taube) Altmann (1918-1943), a leader of the Jewish underground and organizer of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, died in the hands of the Gestapo on May 26, 1943.
