Following the assassination of President McKinley, Goldman was widely demonized in the press for having allegedly inspired Leon Czolgosz to his crime. Sensationalized articles fueled widespread fear of anarchists and prompted Goldman to retreat somewhat from the public spotlight. Over the next few years, she periodically adopted the name "Miss E.G. Smith" in an attempt to escape public notice.
