Gisi Fleischmann

Zionist, Jewish activist and leader of the Slovakian Jewish community during the Holocaust, Gisi Fleischmann (1892 – 1944) worked tirelessly to rescue Jewish victims of Nazi persecution, to smuggle refugees to Palestine, and in attempts to bribe Nazi officials to stop deportations. Ultimately she was included in the last transport from Slovakia to the Auschwitz death camp, from which she never returned.
