The tradition of Tashlikh has Jews gather alongside a body of water on the first day of Rosh Hashanah to "cast their sins into the sea" and thus spiritually renew themselves in preparation for the Day of Atonement. Women participated even in the traditional Eastern European shtetl, as this photo of women performing Tashlikh in Lithuania circa 1920s indicates.
