Roy Einhorn
Roy Einhorn has been the cantor at Temple Israel in Boston for more than 35 years. Cantor Einhorn graduated from Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion School of Sacred Music in 1983, and is now in charge of Temple Israel’s B’nei Mitzvah Program and teaches in the Frances Jacobson Early Childhood Center, the Religious School, and Teen Education. In 1986 and 1987, following Temple Israel’s engagement with the Soviet Jewry Movement, Cantor Einhorn went on two missions to the USSR with Temple Israel of Boston colleagues Rabbi Bernard Mehlman and Rabbi Ronne Friedman. Cantor Einhorn continued his engagement with the refuseniks back in the U.S. until today. Today, Temple Israel and Cantor Einhorn are engaged with supporting Syrian refugees in the Boston area.
Cantor Einhorn explains how he got involved with the Soviet Jewry Movement and his mission trips to the USSR with Temple Israel to support and provide resources to refuseniks there. They brought clothing, books, medicine, and Judaica to the refusenik community. He views his trips to the Soviet Union as a high point in his career and sees a connection between efforts to aid Soviet Jews in the 1980s and refugee crises in the world today.
