Zoe Oreck

b. 1989

Zoe Oreck was born in New Orleans in 1989 and raised in the city.  She is a senior at the University of Georgia, majoring in Public Relations and History.  Zoe and her friends have been involved in the recovery from Hurricane Katrina.  One of their classmates started "Teens for Green NOLA,"  and they worked to clean up Lakeview.

Scope and Content Note

Zoe Oreck, the eighteen-year-old daughter of Julie Wise Oreck and a resident of New Orleans, describes her experience being displaced from her beloved home in the Uptown neighborhood to a hotel in Houston, her adjustments to a new, temporary life there, and her eventual return.  She discusses how Katrina changed her world view on government, community, and spirituality.  She describes Jewish social life in New Orleans from a teenager's perspective.
