October 7 and its Aftermath

Memorial candles at a vigil for Israel held in New York City.

The shocking attack on Israel by Hamas on October 7, 2023, represents an inflection point in Jewish history. The implications of the attack and the ensuing war continue to unfold. We have seen rising antisemitism worldwide, divisions and solidarity within Jewish communities, an increase in Jews’ alienation from wider communities, and a restructuring of Israeli society. The conflict and its reverberations have been shaped by gender in multiple ways that have, as yet, been underreported and underexplored. Use these questions to help JWA document and preserve the experiences of Jewish women and gender-expansive people worldwide during this unprecedented moment.

You can submit your own story or an interview with a Jewish woman either in writing or by uploading an audio recording from your mobile recording app, Zoom, or a digital recorder. We will accept submissions in any language.

  • How have you or your loved ones been affected by the attack on October 7 and the ensuing war?

  • How has your experience of this moment been shaped by your various identities (race, ethnicity, religion, class, disability, sexuality, gender identity, etc.)
  • How, if at all, has this moment in history affected your relationship to Judaism/your Jewish identity?
  • Have these events affected your interpersonal relationships or your relationships with your communities, causing either rupture or renewed connection?
  • What are you afraid of right now? What gives you hope?
