Alan Kravitz

Alan Kravitz

Alan grew up as a quintessential East Coast Jew. That meant that the “Two Bs”—Barbra Streisand and Bella Abzug—were beyond worshipped in his household. As Alan grew, he added another B—belonging to the Divine Miss M, Bette Midler—to that list. In his fantasy life, he’s a singer-songwriter. In reality, people miles away are known to cover their ears when he sings in the shower. So, he settles for being a writer, a Red Sox fan and a devotee of many social justice causes. It makes him feel good. And he thinks Barbra, Bella and Bette would approve.

"Is she Jewish?"

It's one of the first questions we Jews ask about anyone in pop culture who even slightly looks like one of the tribe, or has a "berg" or a "witz" as their name's last syllable.

And the winner is... Women of Valor!

Leah Berkenwald

Leah Wolff-Pellingra is the winner of our contest to rename the History Makers series with her suggestion, "Women of Valor." As it happens, the series was originally titled Women of Valor when it was first introduced in 1997. JWA changed the name to "History Makers" in an effort to improve transparency and better characterize the women in the series in 2008. Inspired by Leah's suggestion, the Jewish Women’s Archive is returning the series to its roots and restoring the project’s original title.

Wendy Wasserstein: Center stage

I miss Wendy Wasserstein. How much so? Well, when Hillary Clinton announced she was running for president, my second thought—right after “All right!”—was: “What would Wendy say?”.

Gloria Steinem: An unheralded GLBT advocate

Alan Kravitz

As I watched HBO’s incisive documentary Gloria: In Her Own Words, one irony became clear instantly: Gloria Steinem is an icon who is utterly uncomfortable with the whole idea of being an icon.
