I was saddened to learn yesterday that Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg had been hospitalized for pancreatic cancer. Ginsburg is only the second woman - and the first Jewish woman - to serve on the United States Supreme Court.

Back in August, Lily had blogged about the profound impact Ruth Bader Ginsburg has had in our nation's history (with mention of her past battle with colo-rectal cancer), so I won't re-post that now. I will, however, re-post the quote Lily cited from Ginsburg's statement in the Jewish Women's Archive's exhibit Jewish Women and the Feminist Revolution.

"I conclude with words I often use when asked to say who I am. I am a judge, born, raised and proud of being a Jew. The demand for justice runs through the entirety of Jewish history and Jewish tradition. I hope that in all the years I have the good fortune to continue serving on the bench of the Supreme Court of the United States I will have the strength and courage to remain steadfast in the service of that demand."

I share this hope as well, and wish Bader Ginsburg a speedy recovery. I just can't imagine the Supreme Court without her.
